  • Vitamin B12 injections are typically given as a treatment for a certain types of anemia or for vitamin B deficiency. They are also given off label to improve metabolism, increase weight loss, and reduce neuropathies.

    The body's ability to absorb vitamin B12 is reduced with increasing age, when taking certain medications, and with certain gastric conditions. Deficiency of vitamin B12 can lead to abnormal neurologic and psychiatric symptoms including ataxia (shaky movements and unsteady gait), muscle weakness, or anemia.
